Experimental Gyrocopter Crashes at Festus Airport

A man and son survives an aircraft crash after their experimental Gyrocopter, which looks similar to a helicopter, crashed near the runway around 1:00 P.M. Sunday.

The frame of the aircraft snapped on impact; rotors were ruined and propellers were snapped, but the two passengers avoid any serious injuries.

Steve Riggle, the airport manager at Festus Airport (Jefferson County, MO) witnessed the gyrocopter go down and heard a “thud” when it hit the ground.

“It’s like watching a car crash,” said Riggle. “If you watch one happen it’s kind of a sinking feeling. It’s kind of like, oh boy. You hope it’s nothing bad but you kind of sometimes expect the worst. In their case it’s great. But you just never know.”
